If you find yourself wandering the charming streets of Uji, Kyoto, make sure to pause at Rokujoan, a delightful café that beautifully marries tradition with a modern twist. Nestled at 〒611-0021, Kyoto, Uji, Renge−5, this café is a haven for those seeking a tranquil retreat and a taste of authentic Japanese flavors.

Rokujoan specializes in matcha-infused treats and soba dishes that are both refreshing and satisfying. The café’s atmosphere is serene, inviting you to relax and savor every bite. On a warm day, the self-service water and tea station stands as a thoughtful touch, ensuring you stay cool as you indulge in their artisanal offerings.

The highlight of the menu includes their renowned matcha soba, which may not boast an overpowering matcha flavor but is wonderfully complemented by a rich, flavorful broth. According to Julia Skye, a guest who visited recently, it’s "a nice quiet place to relax and enjoy some soba." Pair this with their matcha ice cream, heralded by Kuo Walter as the "strongest matcha flavored ice cream in the area," and you have a perfect duet of flavors. Joe Conners, another enthusiast, declares it the best matcha ice cream in Uji, with its stickiness and richness standing out after trying them at several other shops.

For those looking to experiment with flavors, Sandy Tong praises the cold green tea soba with anchovies, calling it a "fresh combination." The noodles are cooked to perfection, and if time permits, she would undoubtedly order another helping. The opportunity to enjoy your meal in their inviting second-floor café adds to the experience, where the setting is both calming and zen-like.

If you’re seeking something a bit different, consider their crepes, which are described as soft and lightly crispy, making for a delightful partner to the matcha flavors. With a large outdoor seating area, XIN LI mentions you can relish the matcha while soaking in the sights of Uji—a truly idyllic setting for your culinary adventure.

Rokujoan stands out not just for its food but also for the outstanding service. Guests appreciate the patience and politeness of the staff, as noted by little mushroom kay, creating an inviting atmosphere that feels exceptionally tourist-friendly. Whether you’re here to sample the comforting soba or enjoy the best matcha ice cream around, Rokujoan embodies a slice of Japanese culinary craftsmanship that is both satisfying and memorable. Don't miss out on this gem when exploring the beautiful region of Uji!

A nice quiet place to relax and enjoy some soba. The service was quick and they had self service water and tea: perfect for a hot day! The matcha soba did not have a very strong matcha taste, but the broth was delicious and very flavorful!

Strongest matcha flavored ice cream in the area and I loved it! For some reason the ice cream tilted immediately after I got it.

Our favorite matcha ice cream in Uji, hands down. We’ve tried matcha ice cream from at least four other places in Uji, and Rokujoan still comes out on top. Their matcha ice cream is the stickiest and most flavorful, with a rich depth you don’t always find elsewhere. We also really love their crepe. It’s soft, lightly crispy on the edges, and pairs so well with the matcha. The shop itself is a small, humble stall with cozy outdoor seating. It’s open-air and feels really relaxed, which makes the experience even better. There’s something about the quiet charm here that keeps pulling us back. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in Uji and want a matcha dessert that’s simple but exceptional.

Grabbed a fast soba before visit Byōdō-in. I went to the 2/F cafe part and had a bar seating. It was tea time so they only served the light meal and desserts. The cold green tea soba with Anchovies were a fresh combination that I have never imagined. The noodles were nicely cooked. If I have time I would definitely order one more soba.

I had the matcha noodles upstairs and then bought the matcha ice cream downstairs. The noodles were a cold soba and very refreshing on the hot afternoon, and the matcha of the ice cream was at the perfect strong but not overly bitter level for a dessert.

The staff was very patient and polite, definitely recommend this place since it is tourist friendly! The food was really delicious and I would recommend the fried chicken with soba set, the chicken was really crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Soba was soaked in cold and savoury base which is a perfect pair with the complimentary tea. The atmosphere was calming and even had a zen like garden outside. I would definitely come here again with my family!

I choose an ice cream with a high percentage of matcha. The color looks more green and really sticky which my spoon hard to dig. Not too sweet,a little bitter. The most important thing is their large front yard ,you can sit outside and taste matcha slowly.Enjoy the street’s view

This place hosts dessert and snacks shop on a ground level as well as restaurant on a second floor. We tried both. Firstly, went to their soba noodle set, flavored with local tea. It was just so so, not much nutrition in it and almost no proteins in it, only very small piece of fish, rest was carbs. I would normally give such place 3 stars maximum. Snack shop was good though, so overall 4 stars. Ice cream and custard bun were very good indeed. There are few seats available in front to seat down and eat in peace.
